Real Estate Checklist

Over the years, we have encountered various legal problems associated with residential real estate transactions. As a result, we have formulated the following checklist for our clients so that they may minimize potential problems with the move.

______l. Contact utilities in the communities regarding services: electric, water, gas, telephone.

______2. Obtain address change cards from post office.

______3. Maintain a file of all moving expenses for tax purposes.

______4. Contact insurance companies: home, auto, life.

______5. Contact the police department in the community if the premises will be vacant for any length of time.

______6. Contact publications in the community regarding newspapers.

______7. Give appropriate persons your new address and phone number.

______8. Transfer accounts with financial institutions, if appropriate.

______9. Obtain records from professionals in the communities you are leaving, if appropriate: school, physicians (doctors, dentists, optometrists, etc.), accountant, and attorney, to transfer to their counterparts.

_____10. Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles: change of address.

_____11. Contact the County Clerk regarding voter registration.

_____12. Contact the City Clerk in the community to determine the day of trash collection, as well as other important information regarding municipal services and obligations.
